Aussie Millions History

The Australian Poker Championship, more commonly known as the Aussie Millions held at the Crown Casino, Melbourne, Australia is undoubtedly the richest poker tournament in the Southern Hemisphere and has become a regular feature of the Poker circuit.

Poker at the Crown Casino was introduced over 10 years ago in June 1997 with the first major tournament being held in July 98 with the buy in to the main event being $1,000, there were 74 entries for the prize pool of $74,000.

In 2001 the Championship was moved to January when 40 entrants paid $5,000 to buy in to the tournament and a chance of winning some of the $200,000 prize pool. In 2003 the popularity of the tournament was growing with International interest first being shown and reflected in the 122 entrants playing for a share in the $1,200,000.

January 2005 saw 263 buying in for $10,000 and the Aussie Millions officially became the Tournament with the largest prize pool ever in the Southern Hemisphere, the prize pool being $2,630,000. The interest generated for this Tourney was reflected by the players, 50% of those at the tables were from overseas, they hailed from UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Italy, Lebanon, Denmark, USA New Zealand and Canada. 2005 was the year that the Aussie Millions made its mark in the Poker Players Diary and proved itself as a tournament not to be missed.

The next year the good and the great flocked to the Crown Casino in Melbourne to sit at the green baize of the Aussie Millions tables, the likes of Joe Hacham (who was the reigning WSOP Champ), Phil Ivey, John Juanda and Daniel Negreanu. 2006 saw 418 players battling it out for a share of the $4,180,000 prize pool.

Sunday, January 14th saw the start of the Championship in 2007 with the final table being played on the following Friday the 19th. For a buy in of AU$10,500 (AU$10,000 + AU$500) a record 747 entered the tournament, the top 80 player got ‘in the money’ winning from $15,000 to 1,500,000 each.

This year saw 36 year old Australian Stewart Scott bagging the AUD$2m 1st prize on 26th January having beaten off 681players. The buy in was $10,500 and the total amount of prize money divvied out was AUD$6.81m+.

So the Roll of Honour looks like this:-

The Winners of the Aussie Millions:
2003 Peter Costa won $394,870, runner up Leo Boxell
2004 Tony Bloom won $426,500, runner up Jesse Jones
